Focus on more sustainable water use during brewing process
On the eve of the Belgian Beer Weekend in Brussels, nine Flemish breweries - including Huyghe – are signing an agreement with the Flemish Government to join forces in making water consumption in the brewing sector more sustainable. The objective is to reduce the consumption of groundwater from aquifers in the brewing process by 2022. Brewery Huyghe - which has been working hard for years to become the greenest brewer in the country - already has implemented many measures to achieve this goal, but commits itself to raising the bar even higher by signing the Deal.
By signing the Green Deal Brewers, the nine breweries are joining forces to further reduce their water consumption by 2022. Alain De Laet, CEO of the brewery, explains what his plans are to reduce their water consumption even further and to continue to be even 'greener ': "Thanks to the start-up of an energy monitoring system with 120 measuring points (including steam, water, electricity and chemicals), we hope to find additional savings points. In addition, we will continue to optimize the reuse of treated wastewater and - where possible - make even more use of rainwater during the production process. And especially collaborate and learn from each other with the 8 fellow brewers of the Green Deal. "
The signing takes place today. Flemish Minister for Environment Joke Schauvliege signs the deal on behalf of the Flemish Government together with sector organizations and co-initiators Belgian Brewers and Fevia Flanders (federation of the Flemish food industry).
